You absolutely cannot be prosecuted for owing somebody money…(Unless it’s the IRS)….there is no debtors prison in the US. Do not be intimidated by the collection people. They will try and scare you any way they can to get payment. They can sue you for payment and pursue any legal remedy available but you cannot be convicted of a crime and sent to jail. DO NOT USE PAYDAY LOANS…THEY ARE LOAN SHARKS!

    I’m not a lawyer, but here goes…
First, if you’re unable to pay your debts, you probably cannot be criminally prosecuted unless it can be proven that you obtained the loans fraudulently. Second, if they are threatening you with prosecution, call your local consumer protection agency or Legal Aid(In Ann Arbor, Mich, with UMich Law School, has pretty good legal help, and cheap if not free.) Good Luck, get back on your feet, and stay away from those payday loan sharks…
